“I had no idea what I wanted to do for a career when I started my Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management in Singapore. However, I found myself becoming increasingly interested in the subject and decided to pursue a postgraduate degree in the same field in London. While I had originally considered studying Psychology, my father encouraged me to explore hospitality management, and I’m grateful that I did.
When I came back to Chennai, I had two choices – either to do event management or something related to food. I ended up working in an event management company for 2 years. It was hands-on and I learned a lot from the entire period of my experience.
During the COVID is when I discovered my love for baking. I began baking at home with the ingredients I had on hand, and it quickly became a stress-relieving hobby for me. As I continued to experiment with different recipes, I realised that I wanted to turn my passion into a profession.
However, launching my baking business, Butter Batter Chennai, was not without its challenges. I struggled to get the word out about my business and make it successful. But with the unwavering support of my family and my husband, who has been my biggest strength and source of encouragement, I was able to overcome these challenges and build a thriving business.
The unwavering support of my family has been an essential ingredient in my journey towards success. There were days when my mother stayed up till 2 AM helping me complete my orders, and my sister laid her hands in sending me new ideas to implement different desserts. They have always encouraged me to pursue my passions and follow my heart, even if it meant stepping outside the boundaries of conventionality.
Growing up in a family that values open-mindedness and maturity, I learned the importance of taking risks and seizing opportunities. Adding to that, every girl would do wonders with a supportive family!
I urge everyone else to embrace every moment of their life, no matter how small, and make the most of it. Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way, and don’t be afraid to chase your dreams, even if it means taking a different path than what others expect of you.”
