Celebrating the #Taanakkaran of TamilNadu, 8
“Growing up whenever anyone would ask me what I wanted to become, I always told them I wanted to be in a job that would require me to wear a uniform. And not just any uniform. It had to be a proper attire – like a cap, belt, badge and shoes. That was the dream. As kids we were always threatened saying that the police officials would catch us if we didn’t behave. It was a convenient threat for which most kids obayed am sure. This in a way kindled my interest towards joining the police force.
I had quite a journey in my career. I came into the force with the knowledge of 6 languages. So they always sent me to do all the important work in Delhi. From being in the president’s convoy to guarding important processions.
I remember this one time when I was posted in Tihar Jail to guard the convict in Indra Gandhi’s murder case. Another time, I was put in charge of capturing the masked robbers who were becoming famous for their notorious raids in different parts of North India.
But moving apart from my career, I have been moved by the works of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Ramana and Vivekananda. I believe we need to get in touch with our spiritual selves in order to attain self realisation.
Ramanar’s famous phrase for self enquiry with two simple words “Naan Yaar?” has helped me delve deep into our true selves.
I believe that India has a varied fabric of culture and religion and we have evolved to respect each other for the uniqueness they present. That is the vision I envision for Bharat. My career helped me travel to different places of worship and imbibe the culture and the spirit of that place. I hope to continue that for the coming years as well.”
