“I have a strong bond with the people here; they are like family to me, which is why I continue working here for a salary that is almost the same as that of the security guards. I hail from Nagarkoil and came to Chennai soon after my SSLC to do some business. My brothers were in this city, so I thought this was a safe place to start my career. Initially, I had a small shop, but that didn’t earn me a regular living, so I came to this apartment in the year 2000 as a watchman. I worked hard, performed multiple odd jobs which the residents asked me to: paid their bills, bought them ration; in short, I was available at every beck and call of theirs.
My dream was to see my children well-settled, leading a comfortable life and that has happened. My son works for a private firm, my daughter in law is working for HDFC bank and my daughter is also well settled. They all want me to stop working now but for me, this building and the residents are like family and it is hard for me to part ways with them, no matter how many fights or arguments they get into with me.”
